NITheCS inspires future scientists at National Science Month launch

NITheCS participated in the National Science Month 2026 National Launch Exhibition, held on 4 July at the Vaal University of Technology's Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park in Sebokeng.

The event formed part of the DSTI's annual National Science Month programme, which celebrates the importance of science, technology and innovation while encouraging young South Africans to explore careers in STEM.

Throughout the day, hundreds of learners, educators and members of the public visited the NITheCS exhibition stand to discover how mathematics, physics, data science and computational research are helping to solve real-world challenges. The stand provided an opportunity for visitors to engage directly with NITheCS representatives, ask questions about research, and learn more about the diverse fields within the theoretical and computational sciences.

Inspiring learners with science
School learners were especially enthusiastic, interacting with the exhibits and discussing future study opportunities. Many were introduced for the first time to concepts such as artificial intelligence, computational modelling, astronomy and quantum science, gaining insight into how these disciplines contribute to advances in healthcare, climate research, finance, engineering and many other sectors.

The exhibition also gave NITheCS an opportunity to highlight its national role in supporting postgraduate training, research collaboration and science outreach across South Africa.

By engaging with young people at events such as the National Science Month launch, NITheCS aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers while demonstrating that curiosity, critical thinking and problem-solving lie at the heart of scientific discovery.

National Science Month is one of South Africa's flagship public engagement initiatives, bringing together universities, science institutions, government departments and industry partners to promote a culture of science and innovation. The 2026 launch featured exhibitions, public engagement activities, media interactions and visits by dignitaries, creating an exciting platform for NITheCS to connect with communities and showcase the impact of scientific research.
