Organisational structure
Collaboration is central to NITheCS’ success. Operating as a consortium, the Institute has contractual agreements with all public universities in South Africa, as well as the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS South Africa).
These ‘branches’ of NITheCS are grouped within five nodes that are geographically located around the country. The nodes, each headed by a designated university, are:
- Gauteng – University of the Witwatersrand
- North – North-West University
- KwaZulu-Natal – University of KwaZulu-Natal
- Eastern Cape & Free State – Nelson Mandela University
- Western Cape – Stellenbosch University
Plans are in place to expand to nine nodes by 2028.
The Institute’s central hub, located at Stellenbosch University, handles administration, hosting, research and capacity development. NITheCS will move into dedicated office space on the campus in 2025.
Beyond its local partnerships, NITheCS collaborates globally with strategic partners such as the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE-AI). This provides a global perspective on theoretical and computational sciences.
