Chris Engelbrecht Summer School

The Chris Engelbrecht Summer School is a distinguished annual South African Summer School in Theoretical Physics. The concept was conceived in the late 1970s and brought to life by the late Prof Chris Engelbrecht (pictured above), in whose honour the event is now named.

Funding for the schools has been provided by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and its predecessor organisations – initially on an ad hoc basis and, more recently, through the NRF’s open research programme. The inaugural school, focused on Quantum Optics, took place at Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg in 1981.

33rd Chris Engelbrecht Summer School

The 33rd Chris Engelbrecht Summer School took place from 7-14 April 2025 at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS). The theme was ‘Theoretical Foundations of Quantum Science and Quantum Technologies’.
