In memoriam: Prof Florian Luca (Stellenbosch University)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of NITheCS Associate Prof Florian Luca (Stellenbosch University), an exceptional mathematician, valued colleague and dedicated mentor.

Born in Galați, Romania, Prof Luca was internationally recognised for his work in number theory. His distinguished career included appointments at universities and research institutions across Europe, Mexico, the USA and South Africa, including the University of the Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University.

A remarkably prolific and collaborative scholar, he co-authored more than 500 research papers with over 200 collaborators worldwide. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005 and served the international mathematical community through several prominent editorial roles.

Beyond his academic achievements, he will be remembered for his generosity, warmth, humour and infectious enthusiasm for mathematics, as well as his passion for mentoring students.
