Prof Karin-Therese Howell appointed Director of AIMS-SA

Congratulations to NITheCS Associate Prof Karin-Therese Howell on her appointment as the new Director of AIMS South Africa, effective 1 December 2025. She succeeds Prof Ulrich Paquet, who is stepping down after a highly successful and impactful term of leadership.

Prof Howell holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of the Free State and is currently an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Stellenbosch University. A multifaceted academic, she is widely respected as both an excellent educator and a National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researcher.

Prof Howell’s academic identity is rooted in both scholarship and service. She has been deeply engaged in public outreach and advocacy, particularly in championing the role of women in mathematics. In addition to her research and teaching, she serves on numerous national committees dedicated to advancing mathematics and currently leads the Women in Mathematics division of the South African Mathematical Society. Her long-term aspirations include strengthening mathematical sciences across Africa, mentoring women in the discipline, and promoting greater inclusion and understanding of neurodiversity within academic environments.

Her relationship with AIMS is longstanding and marked by sustained commitment. She assumed the full-time role of Academic Director in January 2024, and her appointment as Director marks a natural and exciting progression. Well known for her energetic, inclusive, and people-centred leadership style, Prof Howell brings a strong and inspiring vision for AIMS South Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the AIMS-SA Council, Prof David Holgate expressed warm anticipation for the next chapter of AIMS under her leadership.

“Karin-Therese brings deep insight, passion and commitment to every aspect of her work. Her leadership will undoubtedly strengthen AIMS and help shape the future of the mathematical sciences on the continent. We congratulate her and look forward to the inspiring direction she will bring.”
