NITheCS visits the Eastern Cape & Free State node

NITheCS continued its national roadshow programme with a visit to the Eastern Cape and Free State node on 16 September 2026. Hosted at Nelson Mandela University’s (NMU) Summerstrand South Campus, the hybrid event brought together NITheCS Associates, academics, early-career researchers and students from across the region.

NITheCS Director Prof Francesco Petruccione delivered a talk introducing the Institute, its national network and the opportunities it offers for research collaboration and engagement. He highlighted NITheCS’ role in advancing knowledge, innovation and cooperation across the theoretical and computational sciences in South Africa and the wider African continent.

The session provided participants with an opportunity to learn more about NITheCS’ research activities and connect with Associates working across its eight research themes.

The visit formed part of a broader effort by NITheCS to strengthen relationships across its national network, increase awareness of the Institute’s activities and encourage greater participation by researchers and students at universities throughout South Africa.

Prof Petruccione thanked the Eastern Cape and Free State Node Head, Prof Martin Weigt (NMU), for hosting the visit and supporting the continued growth of theoretical and computational science in the region. The event ended with open networking and refreshments.
