NITheCS rewards innovators at 45th Eskom Expo

Winners of the NITheCS prizes with Mr Aluwani Guga

NITheCS participated in the 45th Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair, held at Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park on 9–10 October 2025. The event brought together some of South Africa’s most promising young minds to celebrate scientific excellence and innovation across a wide range of disciplines.

During the Special Awards Ceremony, Mr Aluwani Guga presented laptops on behalf of NITheCS to four school learners who demonstrated outstanding creativity, innovation and scientific rigour in their respective research projects.

Prize winners

Physics: Ms Leony Moyisile, a Grade 11 learner from Thabane High School in the Kimberley District, Northern Cape Province, received the award for her innovative approach to solving real-world physics problems. Her project demonstrated a strong grasp of experimental methods and analytical thinking, making her a deserving recipient of the NITheCS Special Award.

Mathematics: this award went to Mr Endinakho Klaas, a Grade 12 learner from Jamangile Secondary School in the Mthatha District, Eastern Cape Province. His project showcased advanced problem-solving skills and mathematical creativity, reflecting the depth of his understanding and passion for the subject.

Earth Sciences: Ms. Linathi Koyana, a Grade 9 learner from Murray High School in the Eden Karoo District of the Western Cape Province, was recognised for her impressive project that explored environmental and geological concepts with originality and depth. Her achievement, especially as a young scientist from a Quintile 2 school, highlights the emerging talent and potential within under-resourced communities.

Computer Sciences & Software Development: Mr. Ozwikona Makuya, a Grade 12 learner from Mbilwi Secondary School in the Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, was honoured for his exceptional software innovation. As a learner from a Quintile 4 school, his work exemplified how technology and computational thinking can be used to address contemporary challenges.

Through this initiative, NITheCS continues to nurture scientific talent and inspire the next generation of researchers in theoretical, computational, and physical sciences across South Africa. NITheCS remains committed to advancing science education and supporting youth development through sustained engagement, mentorship, and outreach.
