Dr Yaseera Ismail honoured at SA Women in Science Awards

NITheCS Associate Dr Yaseera Ismail (Stellenbosch University) was among the researchers and students honoured at the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s prestigious South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA).

Dr Ismail received second place in the Distinguished Young Woman Researcher in the Natural Sciences category at the awards ceremony held in Johannesburg on 20 August 2026.

A senior lecturer in SU’s Department of Physics and head of the QuPhotonics Lab, Dr Ismail was recognised for her research into quantum optics systems for free-space quantum communication, including satellite-based links.

She said the award was deeply meaningful because it recognised both the impact of the team’s work and the vision underpinning its research.

Record-breaking achievement

“Our work in free-space quantum communication, including the 12,900 km quantum satellite link between South Africa and China, has placed South Africa at the forefront of this emerging field,” Dr Ismail said.

“Although quantum satellite communication is a niche area in South Africa, it has achieved significant international recognition and world-leading milestones.

“It reinforces the importance of investing in ambitious, frontier research and building local expertise in quantum technologies, while encouraging more women and young girls to pursue careers in physics, quantum technology and other STEM fields.”

Presented annually during Women’s Month, SAWiSA recognises and rewards excellence in science, technology and innovation by South African women. The awards celebrate researchers whose achievements contribute to scientific progress and inspire future generations of women and girls to pursue careers in STEM.
