PhD Position in Experimental Optical Quantum Computing at Stellenbosch University (2-3 Years)
We are seeking a self-motivated PhD student with a background in physics and experimental experience in an optics laboratory. The student will join an industry-linked, international research collaboration focused on investigating photonics-based quantum computing using optical systems.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of quantum computing and quantum optics. The precise research direction will be guided by the needs of the collaboration as well as the student’s interests and skills.
The position is based at Stellenbosch University, and relocation to Stellenbosch will be required. Funders request that applicants be South African citizens. Alternatively, applicants currently registered at a South African university may also be considered.

Applicants must have:
- a strong background in physics and programming (preferably Python; experience with LabVIEW is advantageous),
- experimental experience in optics and a strong interest in hands-on experimental work,
- a MSc in Physics,
- good communication and social skills,
- a strong academic record,
- commitment and motivation.
A full bursary is available for the first year and is renewable for up to two additional years.
