In May 2025, we launched NITheCS Village – a mentorship programme for Grade 12 learners across South Africa who are interested in pursuing studies in a NITheCS-related field.

Inspired by the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child,” NITheCS Village aims to draw on the expertise and passion of our Associates to guide and inspire the next generation of researchers and scientists in theoretical and computational sciences.

Learners are matched with mentors who share similar academic interests, and the mentorship takes place entirely online. This offers flexibility and accessibility for both mentors and mentees.

The NITheCS community was encouraged to share this opportunity within their networks to inform interested learners. A call was also issued to NITheCS Associates to volunteer as mentors, supporting mentees with informed decisions on university applications, subject selection, study paths within NITheCS themes, and possible career paths.

Beyond academic support, mentors play a vital role in building learners’ confidence as they transition from school to university and prepare for studies in a NITheCS field.

“This is an excellent opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young learner’s academic journey and to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the NITheCS community,” says Prof Francesco Petruccione, Director of NITheCS.

“By connecting learners with dedicated mentors, we’re not only creating academic pathways but also building a stronger, more inclusive pipeline into science and research in South Africa. NITheCS Village is a step toward transforming potential into achievement.”
