NITheCS bursaries through DSTI-NRF Student Funding
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) have opened the 2026 call for new student funding applications. This opportunity is aimed at students who intend to begin a Master’s or Doctoral degree in 2026 and are seeking financial support for their postgraduate studies.
As part of our commitment to advancing excellence in theoretical and computational sciences, we encourage eligible students in fields aligned with our thematic areas to apply. These bursaries offer valuable assistance with tuition fees and living costs, helping future researchers pursue advanced academic and scientific careers.
CRITERIA
If you are thinking of starting your Master’s or Doctoral degree in 2026 and achieved at least 65% in your previous degree, you may be eligible for funding. Successful applicants will be funded either at Full Cost of Study (FCS) or Partial Cost of Study (PCS).

For South African citizens and Permanent Residents who are:
- financially needy (a household family income of R350K p.a. or less),

For 5% of:
- international students, including South African citizens and Permanent Residents who cannot be funded under FCS but meet other minimum requirements.
