“Dr Mary-Jane Bopape is the Senior Research Manager at the South African Weather Service. She is among the few women meteorologists in Africa.
Recently she undertook groundbreaking post-doctoral research to improve weather and climate early warning systems within Southern Africa. Her study covered Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia Met Services, evaluating and verifying current Numerical Weather Prediction (NMP) models.
Dr Bopape is leading the usage of a number of observation sources, seeking to find areas of improvement in existing models, with the aim of translating climate prediction in an easier-to-understand format for Africa.
For a continent that is as vulnerable to climate and weather changes as Africa, her work is proving invaluable and going a long way to providing early warning of destructive weather patterns.”
