August is Women’s Month, and we are delighted to present various events and communications to honour and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women in scientific pursuits and related fields.

One of our initiatives is the STEM MentHER programme, specially designed to encourage female grade 12 learners to enter the STEM fields of study. Currently, we are running STEM MentHER programmes at the University of Johannesburg, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Stellenbosch University.

Thank you to all the Associates who applied for our Women’s Writing Retreat. We will soon be notifying the successful participants.

We have extended the call for proposals for the next Chris Engelbrecht Summer School, which will take place in January 2024. To submit your proposed topics for the School, which must be relevant to the current research trends in the NITheCS thematic areas, as well as speakers, organising committee and budget, please click here. If you have any questions about the call or the School, please email us.

Recently we had the pleasure of hosting a highly successful Carpentries software workshop. These workshops empower researchers with essential research computing skills to make their work more efficient. Additionally, NITheCS actively participated in the Deep Learning IndabaX, held at the University of Cape Town in July.

As you plan ahead, we encourage you to mark your calendars for two upcoming events for students. Our workshop for bursary holders will be held online on 17 August. We will also issue a call to students this month to participate in our flagship internship programme, which will take place in December 2023. The programme offers students and tutors a valuable experience in research and the work may count as credits towards the students’ studies.

Lastly, we would like to remind you about the second semester courses of the South African Theory And Computational School (SATACS). Some courses commence very soon. You can find details of the courses in this newsletter and on our website.

Wishing you a highly productive and fulfilling August.

Warm regards,

Francesco Petruccione
