SOFTWARE AND DATA CARPENTRY TRAINING

The Carpentries is a nonprofit organisation that teaches software engineering and data science skills to researchers through instructional workshops online. NITheCS engages with The Carpentries to provide Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry workshops. In this way, researchers in the NITheCS fields can acquire the foundational coding and data science skills that can take the pain out of their research.

Some of the skills that has been taught include programme design, version control, data management and task automation in Shell, Git Python and R.

Carpentry instructors

NITheCS also offers workshops to upskill participants to instructor level, so they can also present Carpentry workshops. We are proud of the following participants who have become instructors and can now qualified to teach Carpentry workshops worldwide:

  • Mohammed Farahat (University of Cape Town)
  • Takudzwa Musarurwa (University of Cape Town)
  • Anné Lermer (Stellenbosch University)
  • Caitlin Ransom (South African Environmental Observation Network)
